Medical Board Impersonation Scams: Official MD and DO Contacts for All 50 States and D.C.

A practical guide for MDs and DOs to check suspicious licensing notices, respond to scams, and find official board contacts across all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Medical Board Impersonation Scams: Official MD and DO Contacts for All 50 States and D.C.

By CE App | Contacts checked October 5, 2026

For physicians with MD or DO licenses, and the teams that support them. This directory covers all 50 states and Washington, D.C.; it does not cover U.S. territories or other healthcare professions.

TL;DR: Stop. Don’t pay or share information. Find your board’s official site and use its published phone or recommended form. Ignore contact details supplied by the sender. [1], [2].

Find your board · Already paid or shared information? · Report a scam

About this guide: CE App publishes this article and directory for general information, not legal advice. This is not an official board or government publication; links do not imply agency endorsement. For advice about your license, rights, or obligations, consult an attorney licensed in the relevant jurisdiction.

Board closed? Take these steps now

  1. Stop engaging with the sender. Do not pay, share passwords or security codes, open attachments, or use the sender’s callback number. [1].
  2. Save the evidence. Keep the original email, voicemail, screenshots, and payment records. Preserve attachments without opening them. [3].
  3. Check the board independently. Open its official website and license lookup. Follow any published after-hours instructions. Otherwise, send a brief verification request through the appropriate official channel and follow up when the office reopens. A form submission does not mean someone will respond tonight; Vermont OPR, for example, aims to reply within one to three business days. [4], [5].
  4. Act immediately on money or account exposure. Contact your payment provider or IT/security team. Do not wait for the board to respond. Recovery steps below.
  5. Resolve urgent practice questions with qualified help. If you must decide whether to see patients before the board reopens, we recommend contacting your organization’s on-call risk/compliance lead or licensing attorney. Do not use this article or a public listing alone to decide your authority to practice. [6].
  6. For immediate danger, call 911. For other time-sensitive threats, contact local law enforcement directly. An IC3 report does not provide an immediate response. [3].

What a convincing medical board scam can look like

A message says your medical license has been suspended. The caller knows your name and license number. The letter carries a board logo. The sender demands immediate payment.

Those details can make a scam feel credible. Pause and contact the board independently, using information published on its official website. Oklahoma's September 30, 2026, warning describes urgent payment demands, spoofed caller ID, and fake suspension notices. California also warns about callers impersonating investigators and law enforcement. [7], [8].

The FBI reported 3,322 complaints and more than $37 million in losses involving impersonation schemes targeting medical practitioners between January 2025 and July 2026. These are reported losses across medical practitioners, not an MD/DO-only count. [9].

A demand for secrecy is another red flag. The FBI describes scammers keeping victims on the phone and telling them not to consult others. Texas also warns about callers discouraging contact with an attorney. End the call and seek independent help. [9], [4].

In an account published by Iowa DIAL, Katie Kuehner, DO, described a July 2025 call involving a fake suspension, secrecy demands, and a $19,747 wire request. Board staff confirmed the fraud when she contacted them independently. [10].

Watch for credential theft, too. Florida MQA warns about fake login pages and attachments posing as case documents. Open your licensing portal from the official website yourself; a familiar sender name or domain does not authenticate an email. [11], [12].

Payment-method red flags: demands for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps should prompt you to stop and independently check the request. The FTC warns against using these methods to pay someone claiming to represent the government. [1].

Knowing your details proves nothing about the caller's identity. Names, license numbers, and NPI information can be public. CMS makes NPPES information searchable and downloadable, and DEA warns that impersonators quote NPI or state license numbers. [13], [14].

Avoid assuming every board communicates the same way. For example, California says its staff will never call demanding payment; Louisiana says it never asks licensees to wire money and explains its investigation procedures. [8], [15].

How to verify a suspicious notice

  1. Pause the conversation. Do not pay, disclose financial information or passwords, or click an unexpected link while the sender's identity is uncertain.
  2. Open the board’s official website yourself. Use a saved bookmark or a website linked in this directory. Do not follow links in the suspicious message. [1].
  3. Use the appropriate official contact. Follow the entry’s routing notes. Use an investigation contact when the board recommends it for identity checks; otherwise use its published phone or recommended form. Ask whether the person and notice are legitimate. [16], [17], [6].
  4. Check your own license status. Navigate to the official license lookup from the board’s website. An active public listing does not authenticate a message or rule out an investigation. Some investigations remain confidential. Confirm the notice separately with the board. [4], [18].
  5. Keep the evidence and follow up. Retain the communications and transaction details for reporting. Confirm any real deadline with the board: legitimate investigation correspondence exists, and procedures differ by state. [3], [15].

Hold licenses in several states? Check with each board named in the notice. Even through the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, individual states issue your licenses. Ask licensing counsel about any real action's effect on your other licenses. [19].

If the board confirms a real complaint or proceeding, contact your malpractice carrier promptly and ask about defense coverage and licensing counsel. Coverage varies by policy. [20].

Paid money? Contact your bank or payment provider now through an independently obtained contact. Report suspected fraud and ask whether they can stop, reverse, or recover the payment. Recovery is not guaranteed. [21].

Shared a password? Change it and any other account using the same password. Turn on multifactor authentication. If you cannot sign in, use the provider’s account-recovery process. [21].

Exposed personal information? Follow the recovery or prevention steps at IdentityTheft.gov. [21].

Clicked a suspicious attachment or gave someone access to a work device? Contact your IT/security team immediately. [22].

Patient information exposed? Promptly involve your privacy/security lead and qualified counsel to assess any breach-notification duties and deadlines. Reporting to the FTC or IC3 does not replace required HIPAA breach notifications. [23].

Save the evidence, then use the reporting options below.

Where to report an impersonation attempt

  • The impersonated board: use its official contact in the directory and ask how to submit evidence. A professional-misconduct complaint form may serve a different purpose, so follow the board's routing instructions. [8].
  • FTC: report scams and fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Reports help the FTC identify patterns, build cases, and share information with law enforcement. [21].
  • FBI IC3: report cyber-enabled fraud at IC3.gov. IC3 says to file even if you are unsure whether the incident qualifies. Its reporting service is not an emergency response channel. [3].
  • DEA impersonation: follow DEA’s current scam alert [24], which directs reports of purported DEA-agent calls to FBI IC3.
  • State attorney general: use your state's consumer-protection complaint channel. The National Association of Attorneys General directory links to state offices and their complaint resources; NAAG itself does not handle individual consumer complaints.

Contacts for checking suspicious board communications

Investigation and notice-check contacts:

Louisiana’s scam alert [15] explains the identity-check process; the phone above follows its current contact directory. Tennessee publishes the same investigation contact on its DO board page.

General board contacts recommended in scam warnings: these are not separate investigator hotlines.

Florida MD and DO scam reports: use MQA's Fraud Report Form. For a potentially compromised MQA account, call 850-488-0595 to request an account reset. [11].

The directory also links scam-response guidance from California, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Vermont OPR, which oversees Vermont’s DO licenses. These contacts do not establish 24-hour availability.

Official medical board contact directory

What “checked” means: we checked these contacts against official board and state-agency publications on the date shown in each entry. We did not call the numbers, test email delivery, or obtain staff confirmation. Contacts and procedures can change after that date. Each entry links to its contact source and any additional routing instructions. Confirm the current details there before use.

Choose the right office: the directory has 65 entries covering 50 states and D.C. It includes separate DO boards in Arizona, California, Florida, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia, plus Alabama's Medical Licensure Commission and New York's physician-discipline office. Utah now has one Medical Licensing Board for MDs and DOs. [29], [30].

Use each channel for its stated purpose: a licensing or document-submission email is not automatically a scam-reporting address. The verification/scam field distinguishes investigation contacts, general contacts recommended in warnings, and ordinary routing. General emails and forms appear in Notes. Where an address is unconfirmed, the entry says so and provides another official route. Pennsylvania expressly directs general questions to support tickets. [6].

A familiar email address is not proof of origin. Email senders can be spoofed, and an official mailbox need not end in .gov; Maryland, for example, publishes an rcn.com address. [12], [31].
