     Medical Doctors (MDs) in Michigan must complete 150 CME credits every three years. At least 75 credits must be AMA Category 1 CME.

     MDs in Michigan must complete:

    • Medical Ethics: 1 hour
    • Pain and Symptom Management: 3 hours (including 1 hour on controlled substances prescribing)
    • Implicit Bias Training: 2 hours for initial licensure, then 1 hour per year for renewal
    • Opioids and Controlled Substance Awareness: Required every renewal period (starting May 28, 2024) for prescribers/dispensers
    • Human Trafficking Identification: One-time training required by the next renewal cycle

     DOs in Michigan must complete 150 CME credits every three years, with 60 credits in AOA Category 1-A or 1-B CME.
     

     DOs must fulfill the same special requirements as MDs, including:

     

    • Medical Ethics: 1 hour
    • Pain and Symptom Management: 3 hours (including 1 hour on controlled substances prescribing)
    • Implicit Bias Training: 2 hours for initial licensure, then 1 hour per year for renewal

     Physicians (both MDs and DOs) must complete their CME requirements every three years to maintain licensure.

     Yes. Since June 1, 2022, all new applicants must complete 2 hours within the last 5 years before initial licensure. For renewals, physicians must complete 1 hour per year of the licensure cycle.
     

     Physicians must complete 3 hours of CME in pain and symptom management, with at least 1 hour covering controlled substances prescribing.
     

     Yes. Physicians must complete a one-time training to identify victims of human trafficking, as mandated since December 6, 2021.

     Starting May 28, 2024, prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances must complete training every renewal period.
