CME Credits Required: 100
Licensure Cycle: Every Two Years
Credit Type: Out of the total, 40 credit hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit CME are required every 2 years.
Special CME Requirements:
- End of Life Care: 2 AMA Category 1 credit hours every 2 years.
- Opioid Prescribing: 1 AMA Category 1 credit hour every 2 years.
One-time CME Requirements:
- Cultural Competency: 6 AMA Category 1 credit hours are required.

End-of-Life Care CME Requirement
“a. The State Board of Medical Examiners shall require that the number of credits of continuing medical education required of each person licensed as a physician, as a condition of biennial registration pursuant to section 1 of P.L.1971, c.236 (C.45:9-6.1), include two credits of educational programs or topics related to end-of-life care.”
Opioid Prescribing CME Requirement
“a. The State Board of Medical Examiners shall require that the number of credits of continuing medical education required of each person licensed as a physician, as a condition of biennial registration pursuant to section 1 of P.L.1971, c.236 (C.45:9-6.1), include one credit of educational programs or topics concerning prescription opioid drugs, including responsible prescribing practices, alternatives to opioids for managing and treating pain, and the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion. “
Cultural Competency CME Requirement
“Licensees must complete at least 6 hours of training in cultural competency. Physicians licensed after March 24, 2005 the cultural competency training requirement can be included in the 100 hour CME requirement for licensure renewal.”
