Tennessee MDs are required to complete 40 CME credits during each two-year licensure cycle. At least 2 of those hours must focus on controlled substance prescribing. All credits must be awarded by organizations accredited by the ACCME, AAFP, or AOA and must meet the criteria for Category 1 CME.

Topics required or accepted by the Tennessee Board include:

  • Controlled substance prescribing (minimum of 2 hours per cycle), including:
    • Department of Health treatment guidelines for opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and carisoprodol.
    • Addiction medicine, risk management tools, and related Board-approved content.
  • General clinical education fulfilling AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, AOA 1-A or 1-B, or AAFP-prescribed credit standards.
  • Optional: Up to 10 CME hours per cycle may be earned by reviewing disciplinary case materials if requested by the Department.

CME must be renewed every two years, based on the licensure renewal cycle.

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) must also complete 40 hours of CME every two years, including 2 hours in controlled substance prescribing. Acceptable credit types include:

  • AOA Category 1-A or 1-B
  • AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™
  • AAFP Prescribed Credit

Topics must include the state’s treatment guidelines for controlled substances and may also cover addiction medicine and risk management.

Tennessee DOs must complete 40 CME credits every two years, including a 2-hour requirement on controlled substance prescribing. At least some of these hours must be AOA Category 1 or other board-approved formats.

Topics for DOs must include:

  • Controlled substance prescribing (2 hours), covering opioids and other high-risk medications per Department guidelines.
  • Additional hours in clinical practice, addiction medicine, and patient safety.
  • Optional disciplinary case review (if assigned by the Department) for up to 10 CME hours.

CME credits must be renewed every two years, aligned with the license renewal period. Beginning in 2025, the renewal cycle (not the calendar year) will be the official time frame for all CME audits and compliance checks.
